You want to be capable. Here's where that starts.

You don't want to be the kind of person who has to hope nothing happens. You want to be the kind of person who knows what to do if it does — who carries themselves differently because of it. Who trains with people who take it seriously. Who's genuinely fitter, sharper, and more capable than most.

That's a specific thing. This is the specific place to build it.

What will you learn?

What you'll actually learn

Krav Maga Auckland teaches the internationally recognised KMG curriculum — dynamic, real-world self-defence, not sport, not martial arts. Every technique is practical, progressive, and built around how real situations actually unfold. This includes weapons defence, integrated from your very first session.

Situational awareness

Read environments early, create distance, and avoid conflict before it starts. The foundation of everything.

Strikes and defence

Effective striking fundamentals and defences against common attacks — developed under realistic pressure, not drilled in isolation.

Releases and escapes

Break free from grabs, chokes, and holds — techniques that work regardless of size or strength difference.

Knife and weapons defence

The KMG system integrates knife defence from beginner level — not as an advanced topic but as a core part of practical self-defence from day one.

Ground defence

Defend, create space, and get back to your feet if you end up on the ground — a complete part of the system.

Responding under pressure

Train your body to react with purpose when adrenaline hits — built progressively through scenario work so it becomes instinctive.

De-escalation and avoidance

Verbal boundary-setting, positioning, and reading a situation before it turns physical. The goal is always to avoid — this is the most important skill.

Protecting others

Defending yourself is one thing. Defending someone with you is a different set of considerations — positioning, awareness, and response. Covered as part of the curriculum.

Your Instructors

Trained by the best.

Instructor Aaron founded Krav Maga Auckland in 2015 — New Zealand's first KMG-affiliated club. Certified and teaching since 2010, he holds Expert Level 2 in the KMG system. His training is ongoing and goes directly to the top: multiple international training camps with Master Eyal Yanilov — the founder of Krav Maga Global and the most senior Krav Maga instructor in the world — across Israel, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand.

Instructor Brad trained here before completing his own KMG camps with Master Eyal Yanilov in New Zealand, earning his certification in 2019. He holds Graduate Level 2 in the KMG system. When Aaron teaches a technique, it came from the source — and Brad was trained to the same standard.

Who will you train with?

The people you'll train with.

The people at KMG North Shore aren't athletes or martial artists. They're professionals, parents, shift workers, and people who've decided that feeling capable is worth investing in.

What they share is that they show up, take it seriously, and are there to actually learn something real. Over time, that group becomes one of the main reasons people stay.

People who want to feel more capable

The most common reason. Something happened — or might — and they want to know they can handle it. They stay because the training delivers on that, and because of the community they find.

People in high-risk professions

A significant portion of the group works in healthcare, security, social work, and other roles where physical confrontation is a real possibility. The KMG system's emphasis on de-escalation and proportional response makes it particularly relevant for professional contexts.

People who want a genuine challenge

Some arrive because they've tried gyms, sports, and other martial arts and found them either too casual or too competitive. They're looking for something demanding, structured, and worth the effort. This is that.

People who want to protect others

Parents, partners, caregivers, professionals — people whose first thought in a threatening situation isn't themselves. The skills here work in exactly those contexts, and the training builds the awareness and calm decision-making that matters most when someone else is depending on you.

Your questions answered

What you're probably wondering

Most students at Krav Maga Auckland notice a real difference within the first few weeks — not mastery, but genuine capability and a shift in how they carry themselves. The KMG curriculum is designed for progressive skill-building, so you're developing usable techniques from session one, not waiting months before anything is practical. Meaningful self-defence capability typically develops within three to six months of consistent training.

Yes — every new member's first month includes the Krav Maga Essentials onboarding program alongside their regular classes. It's a four-week structured introduction to the KMG curriculum delivered as weekly videos and articles, so you arrive at each session with context for what you're learning and why. It runs in the background while you train — no extra sessions required.

Core Membership is a monthly membership with no contract — cancel any time. With three Core sessions a week included, it works out at less than $20 a class for most members. Your first month also includes the 4-week Essentials onboarding program at no extra cost.

Traditional martial arts and combat sports are designed around rules, belts, and competition. Krav Maga is designed around real situations — unpredictable, often involving multiple threats, weapons, or environmental factors that a ring or dojo never replicates. The KMG system trains awareness and avoidance first, and physical response only when necessary. There's no sparring for points, no forms or kata — just practical techniques trained progressively under realistic pressure. For a full breakdown against Karate, BJJ, boxing and MMA, see Martial Arts in Auckland — Which One Is Worth It?

Yes — most students at Krav Maga Auckland start with no martial arts background at all. The KMG curriculum is designed to take you from zero experience to genuine self-defence capability through structured, progressive training. Beginners train alongside more experienced students without feeling out of their depth. Most people are surprised by how quickly it clicks.

No. Fitness is a by-product of training, not a requirement to start. Classes are demanding and you will get fitter — but students arrive at every level and build from there. The training is scaled to where you are, not where you think you should be.

Krav Maga Auckland trains at 47 Birkenhead Avenue, Birkenhead, Auckland 0626 — on Auckland's North Shore. Easily accessible from Northcote, Glenfield, Takapuna, and Albany. Free parking at Highbury Mall directly opposite.

Comfortable, flexible workout clothes — something you can move freely in. Trainers or flat-soled shoes are fine. No special equipment is needed for your first session. You'll build up a kit list gradually if you continue, but there's nothing to buy before you start.

Yes — Krav Maga Auckland classes are structured and well-supervised, with techniques introduced progressively so students build capability without being put in situations they're not ready for. Contact and pressure are introduced gradually, and instructors manage the intensity for every level in the room. The training is demanding, and some contact is part of it — but the environment is controlled, and the focus is always on learning, not on testing each other.

Krav Maga is particularly well-suited to women's self-defence because it's built around principles — awareness, de-escalation, and effective response — rather than size or strength. Many women train at Krav Maga Auckland, and the training builds real confidence both in and out of class. We also run a dedicated Women's Self-Defence programme — ask us about it.

Krav Maga Global (KMG) is the leading international Krav Maga organisation, founded by Eyal Yanilov. KMG maintains a rigorous certification standard for instructors in over 60 countries.
